Katie Fredricksen, MA, CDTLF, CPCC, PCC

My name is Katie Fredricksen. And I’ve been passionately engaged in the exploration of emotional resilience and helping people live into their potential since I was 16 years old.  And even though I’ve been on this journey for decades, I continue to embrace this learning journey daily.

I had a happy childhood by all accounts.  Born and raised in Hawaii in a family with two older brothers, I was loved, cared for, and content.  From the outside looking in, everything was perfect.  But on the inside, it felt more complicated.

At a very young age, I learned that things seemed to work out well when I focused on the needs of others. I dismissed my own feelings and desires, and began looking outward for approval and feedback on who & how I should be.

I became a Pleaser and Perfectionist.

Difficult feelings like anger, fear, or shame had no place in that world and were not openly discussed or expressed in my family.

In my family, it seemed to me that we were either “fine” or “good.”  Not knowing any different, I just assumed that’s how it had to be.

But all that changed when at 16, I applied for a coveted role as a Peer Counselor at my high school, and to my surprise and delight I was selected! The intensive training and personal growth that resulted opened my eyes to so much and shifted the course of my life.

I learned that other people were feeling the same messy, complex, and vulnerable feelings that  I was, underneath all the “fine.”

That we all needed somewhere safe to be who we were. That when we numb difficult emotions, we numb all emotions - including joy, love, and belonging - dimming aliveness and limiting potential.
In that Peer Counseling group, I realized that the power of becoming and sharing who we actually are has the potential to impact every area of our lives.

It was exhilarating and I was hooked. When I left Hawaii to attend Stanford University, my interest in people and cultures led to the study of an array of social sciences and anthropology. (Later, I studied psychology and drama therapy with a particular interest in how emotions drive our behaviors and the impact that has on organizations and societies.)

When I graduated from college, I had no clue what was next for me. I just knew I wanted to continue in the exploration of what’s possible as we become more fully ourselves.

And I ended up right where I wanted to be when one of my high school mentors offered me a job as a corporate trainer in Santa Fe. So, I packed up my degree, my love for learning, growth and personal expression, and my insatiable desire to help people live authentically and headed for New Mexico.

For more than 20 years, I worked with learning and development companies, training teams & individuals on new ways to be and think. It was a remarkable experience, partnering with hundreds of corporate and nonprofit teams, helping them to work better together.

But the more I taught and the more I learned, the more holes I started seeing in the process.

What I was teaching was useful, there was no doubt about that. I was helping individuals and teams to be more effective, sure. But it seemed to be only scratching the surface.

I wanted to support people in learning to live fully into their values, grow into their potential, and live richer lives. I wanted to help organizations lead with courage and bravery, value the whole person, and create cultures that truly mattered.

That’s when I started my quest to find a new way to impact organizations. I began to delve more deeply into the work of Brené Brown.

Training with Brené to become a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator has given me exactly the tools I needed to be of the highest service to organizations, teams, and leaders.

Now, I work with teams like yours to unleash the full power of each team member - to act courageously and step fully into their own potential while creating teams that enrich lives and create a new level of results for their organization.

When I look back to the lessons I learned about emotional authenticity and psychological safety in high school, I realize nothing has changed.

People need to be heard. To be valued. And to be who they are. When leaders create a culture where those needs are met, they create an environment where there are no limits to what they can accomplish.

That’s when magic happens.

I’d love to support you and your team on this journey. Set up time with me today to talk about how we can boost the performance, accountability and joy of your team.
